Light Year is a meditation of time, distance and proximities, a mapping or reimagining of history and epiphanies, and an excavation of emotional truth. These poems delve into the mind of a poet crossing spaces of deep wounds, sacrifice, misunderstanding, love and healing. It offers a poet’s constellations of friendships, love and struggles as she moves through upheaval and change. The book offers subjective glimpses into the journeys of a migrant and mother, looks at what is broken and what she still holds dear in life.
Jennifer Wong is a Hong Kong-born poet who lives in the UK. She studied English at Oxford and has an MA and PhD in creative writing from University of East Anglia and Oxford Brookes. She has three collections including Letters Home (Nine Arches Press). She is the co-editor of State of Play: Poets of East and Southeast Asian Heritage in Conversation (Outspoken Press, 2023) and Where Else: An International Hong Kong Poetry Anthology (Verve, 2023). She is also the author of Identity, Home and Writing Elsewhere (Bloomsbury, 2023).
Letters Home 回家, Jennifer Wong’s remarkable and vivid third collection of poems, unravels the complexities of being between nations, languages and cultures. Travelling across multiple borders of history and place, these poems examine what it means to be returning home, and whether it is a return to a location, a country or to a shared dream or language.
